Kiss, Marry, Kill
After reading the Great Gatsby, I have interpreted the different character traits within each of the main characters. For this assignment choosing which character I would have to kiss, marry, and kill with the males and females was an easy decision for me.
Starting off with who I would marry. Out of Tom, Gatsby, and Wilson, I would definitely marry Gatsby. I analyzed the pros and cons within his character and I found him to be the most intriguing. When Gatsby shows his love and affection towards Daisy, the things he did for her is how I would want someone to treat me. He does grand gestures for her to show his love. In chapter 4, page 78, it states “Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay. ” He loved her so much that when he got back from war his main goal/ priority was for him to be with her. That is showing true commitment and loyalty to her. Buying a house across the water could be taken as a little psycho but it also shows that he is that dedicated to her and that is someone I would want to be married to. To continue, Gatsby needs the attention. For example, he would throw those house parties waiting for Daisy to show up. He would keep to himself at his own parties and watch everyone else have fun. He wasn't out womanizing and looking for attention from other girls, it was always just Daisy. A quote that helps show this is on page 79 it states from Jordan “I think he half- expected her to wander into one of his parties, some night..” This again is him patiently waiting on Daisy no one else and I feel that I would want someone to be loyal and go out of their way for me which again is why I would marry him.
Moving forward, for the girls I would Marry Jordan. I like how she mostly keeps to herself and doesnt get involved in all the drama that goes on with the other characters. Jordan also is very independent as well as beautiful. In chapter 7 Nick states “There was Jordan beside me, who, unlike Daisy, was too wise ever to carry well- forgotten dreams from age to age.” This quote is showing Nick comparing Jordan and Daisy and basically saying how Jordan is more of a woman which includes her independence.
Next, I would for sure have a meaningless kiss with Wilson. The main reason why I would kiss Wilson and not marry him is because he unnecessarily shot and killed Gatsby for something he didn't even do with only the words of Tom Buchanan. Wilson was truly in love with his wife Myrtle, who further broke his heart by cheating which “the shock had made him physically sick.” It was really hard for him to take in the fact that his marriage would never be the same with her. Which he further blames himself for allowing it to happen. Wilson also becomes a little psycho and states on page 136 “I've got my wife locked up in there...” “She’s going to stay in there till the day after tomorrow and then we’re going to move away.” Again, this is why I would ONLY kiss Wilson, because for a man to be that obsessed with his wife even after she cheated is a major red flag. He is a little too obsessive for me personally.
As for the girls, I would kiss Daisy. Daisy is very beautiful but emotionally confused with what she wants (relationship wise) she just loves all the attention that comes her way. She is a very envious person and not someone I'd marry. She states “Im p-paralyzed with happiness” Daisy always loves to show her flirtatious side and wants everyones eyes to be on her. That is not wifey material. Another quote that I found that describes her personality is on page 9 “do they miss me.” Showing more of her wanting attention from others. Aside from all of this, she killed Myrtle. On page 143 it states “Was Daisy driving?” “Yes.” So with that, a kiss would be all I'd give to Daisy, she needs to get a reality check.
Going into the best part, I would kill Tom Buchanon. Since you've read the book you definitely can make an assumption on my reasons why. To start off, he is extremely racist. In chapter 1 he states “The idea is if we don’t look out the white race will be-- will be utterly submerged.” This was completely not necessary and out of context. Aside from this Tom is a full on cheater. He created this whole other life with another woman and owned a whole separate house for them. He hit Myrtle(his mistress) right in the face, so the abuse there is a big no no. His whole personality is just unattractive and disgusting. Tom is even described as “Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward.” Even the way Nick had described him was just exactly who he shows himself to be. The last reason why I would kill him is because he is the reason why Wilson killed Gatsby. If he didn't snitch and falsely accuse him, he wouldnt have killed him.
Lastly, to end it all off I will be killing Myrtle. Her character just outright makes my blood boil. I genuinely cannot stand her presence. She is just not a good person and deserved everything she got. She is so childish and immature for her age. Right before Tom hits her she says on page 37 “ Daisy!Daisy!Daisy!” The fact that she went out of her way to stir up problems just really irritates me. She is a whining baby that doesn't know when to stop. Myrtle is also allllll about chasing that money. She only wants men who are going to make her look wealthy even though she's not at all. Once she had found out her husband George Wilson was broke and not actually wealthy she then lost interest and found her way to Tom. She is very needy. On page 28 Tom states “Here’s your money. Go and buy ten more dogs with it.” The reason why she stays is because he keeps giving her the money. She is a whole gold digger and just a horrible person. So therefore, I chose to kill her.
To Conclude, this was a fun assignment and these were my choices for the kiss, marry, and kill.
